The news that Cypress will acquire Broadcom’s Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Zigbee IoT product lines for $550 million prompted Ayla Network’s CEO and co-founder Dave Friedman to comment that the “IoT requires seamless, simple integration between MCUs, sensors, best in class networking, and integrated software and services. So, Cypress' acquisition of Broadcom's IoT business will put the hardware and firmware components under one roof, making a powerful force in the market.”
Broadcom is one of Ayla’s semiconductor partners and part of a growing IoT ecosystem that Ayla is building. Ayla’s Embedded Agents are available on Broadcom’s WICED (Wireless Internet Connectivity for Embedded Devices) platform. Wi-Fi modules running the Ayla Embedded Agent are available from Broadcom, Murata, NXP Semiconductors, STMicroelectronics, Universal Scientific Industrial Co (USI), etc., and they enable cloud connectivity with a “plug and play” development experience.
Friedman continued by saying "Broadcom has long been a leader in networking technology, and its IoT assets and WICED brand in particular, should help Cypress move into more of a leadership position in the consumer IoT segment of the market."
In a press release announcing the news, Broadcom’s IoT General Manager Stephen DiFranco said "We are thrilled to be joining forces with Cypress to address the fast growing IoT market. With our IoT connectivity products, Cypress will be able to provide the connectivity; the MCU, system-on-chip, module and memory technologies; and the mature developer ecosystem that IoT designers require, creating an end-to-end portfolio of embedded solutions and a single IoT design platform."
