“Math class is tough,” Barbie infamously lamented. And so, apparently, is building a smart Dreamhouse for the world’s favorite fashion doll.
Mattel was an early adopter of smart home technology when it introduced The Barbie Hello Smart Dreamhouse in 2016.
When we heard that Mattel stopped selling the smart toy last year, we thought about how we could help the famous brand design Barbie’s smart home Dreamhouse 2.0. Here’s what we’d suggest:
On the kitchen counter, a Hamilton Beach coffee maker ensures that Barbie never runs out of her favorite blend of coffee. For early mornings when coffee on the go is necessary, a smart thermos, controlled through Barbie’s smartphone, keeps her beverage at the perfect temperature for up to two hours.
If Barbie needs help preparing a gourmet meal, SideChef software helps Barbie master the basics of cooking.
Is Barbie’s little sister Skipper and her pals trading lunches at recess? Now they can optimize their lunches since they'll be carrying smart lunchboxes with an app that lets them bookmark and share recipes on a social network. If they’re running out of peanut butter and jelly, Google Home voice integration lets them add their favorite brands to the grocery shopping list.
Smart homes also make sure Barbie’s dog Taffy and Barbie’s cat Blissa are set for the day. Barbie’s smart Dreamhouse lets Barbie use her smartphone to feed and monitor kitty mealtimes remotely via WiFi using the PetSafe automatic feeder. If Taffy needs some training, CleverPet is set up to teach him some new tricks with three sensitive, light-up touchpads that reward him with treats.
Smart Indoor Living
The smart Dreamhouse living spaces feature Hunter ceiling fans that can be programmed to turn off once Barbie leaves a room and turn back on if it gets too warm. And her Stelpro Maestro smart thermostat helps maintain comfortable temperatures while saving energy.
An Innr lighting system pre-programs various lighting scenarios, such as bright lights for Skipper’s homework sessions after school, or a dimmer setting for movie night in front of the TV. Smart plugs allow Barbie’s smart home to keep seasonal decorations on timers, while Prolitec Aera diffusers keep the house smelling of the scent of her choice.
To banish pet hair, dust, and crumbs, the Shark Ion Robot vacuum cleans the floor and the carpets while Barbie relaxes on the couch.
After Barbie and her boyfriend Ken are finally married, they’ll have a smart Dreamhouse room for their baby. In the smart Dreamhouse nursery, Baby is rocked to sleep with the Fisher-Price Rock ‘n Play Sleeper with Smart Connect. With the app on a smartphone, Barbie, Ken, and Aunt Skipper control the unit’s vibration and rocking speed and specify environmental sound effects, without needing to be in the room.
A connected video baby monitor lets the grown-up dolls keep an eye on Baby from other rooms in the smart Dreamhouse, while the Owlet baby smart sock uses hospital-grade pulse oximetry to monitor Baby's heart rate and oxygen levels and will send an alert immediately if something is amiss.
Smart Master Bedroom
In the master suite, a Kyro mattress detects movement, and a ChiliPad temperature-controlled mattress design tracks Barbie’s sleep and wake times, checks for optimum room temperature, and manages light levels.
Now, which of her fashion ensembles should Barbie wear? Not a problem. Amazon’s Echo Look takes head-to-toe photos and six-second videos with the voice-activated camera to compare outfits to find out which looks better, or freshens up her look with items recommended to go with clothes Barbie already owns.
In Barbie’s smart Dreamhouse bathroom, there’s no waiting for the water to heat before a shower. The EvaDrop smart dreamer head uses an internal heat sensor to track when the water meets her desired temperature and starts the water flow once it is warm. It also adjusts or cuts off the flow based on whether Barbie’s directly beneath it or elsewhere. And those too frequent Dreamhouse doll guests who take incredibly long showers? EvaDrop will let them know when their time is up and cut off the water.
Keeping track of Barbie’s dental hygiene is solved with smart toothbrushes like the Ara from Kolibree that records brushing habits and provides health tips.
The modern bathroom scale now does a whole lot more than measure Barbie’s perfect weight. The Withings body composition Wi-Fi Scale also tracks body composition and nutrition for Barbie, Ken, and Skipper.
Smart Safety and Security
When Barbie isn’t available to give tours of her smart Dreamhouse, Hampton’s ARRAY digital deadbolts work with the Dreamhouse’s Wi-Fi so the door can lock and unlock from anywhere with a smart device. Barbie can send codes to authorized users -- like her cleaning people -- and determine when she wants them to have access to her home. And, with geofencing, when Barbie pulls into the driveway in her pink two-seater convertible, ARRAY will know Barbie is home, and send a notification to ask if Barbie wants to unlock her door.
Barbie’s Dreamhouse also uses Simple Home products, which let Barbie control her home from anywhere using a smartphone app, include Wifi-based security cameras and alarms, motion and window sensors, smart LED light bulbs, doorbells, and smart plugs with energy monitoring.
Barbie stays safe in her smart Dreamhouse with Kidde RemoteLync smart monitoring devices that plug into an outlet, listen for a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm, and use Wifi to send alerts via smartphone and phone 911 directly. There’s also a RemoteLync, a battery-operated, cordless camera that sends alerts via smartphone when motion is detected when no one’s supposed to be in the house.
And no smart Dreamhouse would be complete without a LeakSmart intelligent flood protection system. Even if Barbie is out tooling around in her pink convertible, the LeakSmart system instantly detects water leaks, automatically shuts off Barbie’s main water supply in five seconds or less, and notifies her immediately.
Did Barbie remember to shut the garage door? Of course, she did, or we would have heard about it from the smart Dreamhouse smart garage door opener.
Smart Outdoor Living
Barbie’s smart Dreamhouse garden looks great – from her Malibu xeriscaped section to her strawberry plants to her lawn. Her smart sprinkler controls have taken into account soil and plant types, sun exposure, and local weather forecast to ensure her garden gets exactly the amount of water it needs.
Barbie’s Wifi-connected portable grill is ready for a Malibu-style BBQ. It’s set to monitor the temperature inside the grill, and to alert Barbie when her smoked brisket is ready for doll guests.
Now wasn’t that fun?
