Chinese market has been part of Ayla’s core business since inception; new integration with Weixin/WeChat social communication service highlights commitment

SUNNYVALE, Calif., June 15, 2015 – Today’s related news about Ayla’s integration IoT integration with Weixin (offered as WeChat outside China), the world’s largest social network, is the latest evidence that Ayla Networks, whose agile Internet of Things (IoT) platform provides comprehensive connectivity for any kind of product, has made China a top priority for its business.

“The IoT is all about connectivity, and from the very beginning we realized it made strategic sense to pay close attention to China, the world’s most populous and connected nation,” said David Friedman, CEO, co-founder of Ayla Networks. “Unlike U.S. companies that treat China as an afterthought, Ayla has had strong priorities and ties to China ‘built in’ to our company from the outset.”

Ayla Continues to Build on its Established Ties to China

Ayla’s announcement of its Weixin/WeChat Proxy Service—which will allow manufacturers of IoT-connected products to quickly and easily add control of their products under the WeChat ‘mega’ app—is not Ayla’s first experience with the world’s fastest-growing social and commerce app. At CES 2015 Ayla worked in cooperation with Caesars Entertainment to demonstrate hotel rooms of the future at the LINQ Hotel & Casino, leveraging the WeChat social network.

Ayla’s China roots began at the company’s inception: One of Ayla’s three co-founders is Phillip Chang, a Chinese national with more than 25 years of experience building and growing companies in Taiwan, China and the United States. A recognized business leader in Asia, Chang is Ayla’s vice president and general manager for Greater China.

Ayla established its China office, located in Shenzhen, in 2014. The office is fully staffed with engineering, sales and marketing experts who are native Mandarin speakers.

That same year, Ayla announced that it had obtained a license to serve as an Internet Content Provider (ICP) in the People’s Republic of China, one of the few U.S. companies, and the only U.S. IoT platform company, to be granted such a license. As a licensed ICP, Ayla is permitted to collaborate with manufacturers, websites, social networks and others to build a nationwide framework for the IoT in China.

In April 2014, Ayla closed a $14.5 million Series B financing round that included SAIF Partners, one of China’s largest venture capital firms. Later that year, Ayla’s board of advisors added Jeff Xiong, former chief technology officer at Tencent, developers of WeChat, and a managing director at 7 Seas Ventures, which invests in U.S. companies seeking to enter the Chinese market as well as Chinese companies interested in entering U.S. or European markets.

A number of Ayla’s customers are Chinese manufacturers. Publicly announced Ayla customers in China include:

  • Ayla’s first announced customer, SINA, a major online media company serving China and the global Chinese communities
  • Yifang Digital Technology, a leading global manufacturer and innovator of consumer electronics
  • TCL, one of the largest consumer electronics enterprises
  • Devotion, makers of residential water heaters and gas-powered boilers
  • Happycable, a manufacturer of cable assemblies, adapters and electromechanical wiring harnesses for home theater and other applications
  • Shenzhen Orena Group, a manufacturer focusing on LED lighting products, fire alarm systems and vehicle monitoring systems
  • Ozner Water International Holding, China’s largest office and commercial drinking water filtration company
